A concrete foundation is the first line of defense against water and water vapor entering the structure of a building. Waterproofing is the process of coating concrete in order to prevent moisture and liquid from entering inside the structure. It is often also confused with Dampproofing, the process of using an asphalt-based coating to the foundation, which is less recommended in modern residential construction due to being unable to seal larger holes or cracks left by form ties. The process of waterproofing on the other hand applies both an asphalt-based substance and also a rubberized asphaltic membranes attached to polyethylene film in order to give it more protection.
